DIY | 30 Minute Apron

By Brittany

Picture
I remember clearly 3 Christmases ago when I got the crazy idea to make handmade gifts for everyone on my list. I had just started college and had no real passions (besides eating and Netflix). I thought, "Hey, sewing doesn't seem too hard" so I mosied on down to Walmart and picked up a machine. I bought fabric at Joanns and some ribbon and got to work. Although it wasn't too hard, it was extremely time consuming and ended up being kinda expensive. I've left the expensive, time consuming projects in my "newb" day. Now, I aim for quick and relatively inexpensive projects. This one is just that. The apron cost only about $5 dollars to make. That means you can make gifts for 20 people and stay under $100 dollars! That's pretty impressive ;)

Above, you can see the apron made with a gathered skirt. Another option (which I personally like better) is to pleat the skirt. I will show you the gathered method first and then the pleated method.

Supplies needed:
One piece of fabric, measuring 36 inches by 36 inches
2 yards of ribbon (adjust depending on how long you want your ties)
1 yard of trim for the bottom (I ADORE pompom balls, but you could use lace or the likes)
Thread, matching your fabric
Sewing machine

Start by cutting out your 36 X 36 inch piece of fabric. Next, hem all of the edges (I use a zig-zag stitch), unless your fabric does not fray or you like the frayed look. Then, gather the top of your skirt, making sure the top now measures 18 inches. Pin your ribbon on top of your gathered skirt and sew. Then, pin your trim on TOP of your bottom hem and sew. TADA! Wasn't that easy?!

*If you want a pleated skirt, instead of gathering your skirt, simply pleat. If you choose to please, instead of sewing the ribbon directly on top, you are going to want to put the ribbon face down on your fabric (right sides together) and stitch as close to the edge as you can. Open your sandwich and fall in love: this will create a nice, clean look, keeping your pleats in place.

These aprons make great Christmas gifts and Housewarming gifts. They are so easy to make and always look adorable.
